Auranofin : a drug used in treatment of Arthritis is effective at inhibiting Covid-19

Researchers said that a drug called Auranofin is effective at inhibiting the novel coronavirus known as SARS-Cov-2. Auranofin ws approved in 1985 by the US FDA to treat rheumatoid arthritis. The researcher tested the drug while screening FDA-approved medications for their potential use in th fight against SARS-CoV-2.

Researchers say that drug repurposing is the faster route to treat Covid-19. Mainly because these medicines are proven to be safe to use in humans. SARS-CoV-2 cannot reproduce on its own. A virus needs host cell proteins to manufacture additional copies of itself. An effective drug interferes with this copying process.

The goal is to shut down the virus ability to replicate inside the host. In the new study, scientists used Auranofin to treat human cells infected with the coronavirus. The amount of virus within the cells dropped by 95% in less than 48 hours of treatment.

Treatment also showed a significant reduction of inflammation induced by the coronavirus. Auranofin also drastically reduced the expression of cytokines which refers to proteins that draw immune cells to the site of infection.

The team plans to test the drug in animal models to learn more about its effectiveness in treating the Covid-19. The immune system usually works by fighting off invading pathogens and by repairing damaged tissues in the body.

Many coronavirus patients die because of a “cytokine storm” . during a cytokine storm, the immune response gets out of control as it kills healthy tissue and ultimately leads to organ failure.

Thus Auramofn could inhibit replication of SARS-CoV-2 mitigate the infection and also reduce the associated lung damage. Lung damage caused by Covid-19 often leads to severe respiratory distress.

Auranofin is a chemical compound containing gold particles. Scientists have experimented with gold compounds to treat diseases such a HIV, cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, and parasitic and bacterial infection
